Regulatory compliance
Every KMCL activity is mapped to the licence, permit or certificate Tanzanian law requires, and reported to the Mining Commission.
The Mining Commission
The Mining Commission is the authority that regulates mining in Tanzania. It grants and supervises mineral rights, licences and permits.
Its responsibilities cover the areas that matter most to how we operate:
- Licensing of mineral rights, processing, refining and smelting
- Regulation of mineral trade and exports
- Mine safety and environmental management
- Monitoring of local content and corporate social responsibility (CSR)
Licences & permits
Different activities need different licences. Processing and refining are licensed separately.

Mineral trading & export rules
Who can trade minerals
- Dealer Licence: to buy and sell minerals as a business
- Broker Licence: to act as an intermediary between buyers and sellers
- Mineral-right holders: may sell or dispose of minerals from their own licence area
What each export needs
- An export permit from the Mining Commission
- Tanzanite: a Certificate of Origin
- Diamonds: a Kimberley Process Certificate
- Royalties and inspection fees paid before shipment
